iPod video "spy shot" a fake
Posted Feb 26th 2006 3:30PM by Dan Pourhadi
Well, well, looky here: Turns out that widely-distributed image of the
supposed 6G "true video" iPod was a total and utter f-a-k-e fake. MacRumors points to this video
(YouTube) that documents the creation of the original image, and this blog
post right here shows why the second pic is also a
fake. That's too bad. I really wanted one of those.
Update: Readers are posting links to various sources (link, link) that point out discrepancies in the video vs. the actual image, hinting that the video itself may be the fake. This whole thing is starting to hurt my head. How about you compare them yourselves and make your own judgement -- and then we'll wait to see what Apple actually announces, making all of this speculation pointless anyway.

Last I checked, TUAW wasn't a news organzation but a weblog. Nor has it ever claimed to be a news organzation employing journalists. LD, you can bitch and complain all you want about what you see as a failure by TUAW, but the fact remains that you're the one with a misconception here.
As for why TUAW didn't issue a retraction. Um...remember that part about TUAW not being a news organization?

Those on the macrumors forums have spotted inconstancies from the original photo and the video.

Also the Google logo has the hockey puck on it, meaning it was made on Saturday when that image was on Google's homepage.

I love how blogs that post news always try to hide under the guise of not being a news organization. BS.
TUAW exists to bring news and information to people who have an interest in Apple products. That's what these commercial blogs are all about, specializing in content (news and information) on a particular subject.
In the interest of providing that information and news it behooves them to provide accurate information, even if it is a rumor. With the fake they posted the other day, had they taken 5 minutes to research it before they posted they would have known it was just a photochop. This was never a secret, they just didn't bother to read.
Further, it was "proven" to be a fake within a short period of time. That would have been the appropriate time to post a retraction (yes, they should post retractions). The appropriate time is not days later by a different blogger. The original has a duty to the readers to providee good info, and when shown wrong, to post a retraction ASAP.
It's called credibility and TUAW is losing it. Well, certain bloggers here are.

Maybe the video was just someone trying to recreate the photo, or demonstrating how easy it would be to make it.

Like I said in my earlier posting, those Chinese characters were not written by a native.

the Chinese Character on the product label was never added in the video...

LD, I think you are completely correct. Someone who takes their Mac news as seriously as you shouldn't bother themselves with error prone "pseudo journalists" like the crew here at TUAW.
If I would you I would stop reading these "commercial blogs". In fact you should probably stay off the internet entirely as the web is quite prone to disseminating misinformation.
Traditional media is more the way to go for you. Hey Fortune and Forbes has the occasional Apple article. And USA Today has been known to print articles on both the iPod and Macs. And lord knows they never post erroneous and uninformed information on technical products.
And if that doesn't work for you then maybe you will want to pickup a subscription to MacWorld. Sure you may have to wait a few weeks to learn the same info blog readers got within minutes of it being released, but at least they have a month to double and triple check their info. And surely that will tickle your fancy.
Do yourself, and all the other readers here, a favor and only settle for your information from completely reliable and unreproachable sources, like the New York Times. At least from publications like the NYT you know there is no chance for false information or made up stories. Thank the lord for traditional media, right LD?

*Sarcasm can be exhausting. Keep on doing what you do TUAW. The detractors are the minority. The rest of us appreciate the work you do here.

Well I'll be darned. Actually, those pictures that show that the video is a fake look pretty convincing too. I guess if I've learned one thing today, it's to never, ever trust anything found on the internet. Ever.

I think its kinda weird that the video maker is dutch, yet he typed the words in english into the widget. I dunno if that means anything, but something is definetly fishy about the video and the pics.

To all the people who say that the making of video is fake - well i don't know one way or the other. However I see it as perfectly feasible that whomever made the image in the first place didn't do the making of video at the same time. This could be a re-enactment of what they did - hence why it's not identical.

I dunno if its a fake or not but the way in which the video shows how he made the pic is kind of dumb. For example, when he was widening the screeen, he took a pic of the 5G with the screen to the left side then to the right side...what was the point in that? Why not just take one pic then copy and invert the screen. Moreover, what was the point of even bothering with the screen if ur just going to cover it with a LCD test pic? Lastly, when he was placing the LCD test on the ipod cover...it was pretty sloppy.

I don’t think this the video is the footage or the the guy making the original image. To me, the video is a demonstration of how someone could have made the image. Conclusion, author of video is not the author of the image.
